Freddie Matthews writes from London: The big news of the music week from UK had to be the Mercury Music Prize winner announcement, last Thursday night.

Each year the Mercury Music Prize winners fall into one of two categories.
The first an artist or band you have actually heard of this strange award seems to find up-and-coming acts you’ve never heard of. This year, it’s the latter of the two scenarios as indie-rock and electronic-folk scenesters alt-J won this prestigious award for their album An Awesome Wave but what’s with the mere £20k prize?

Also featuring this week for some bizarre reason was X-Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger. In X-Factor news, the already established singer songwriter Lucy Spraggan, who missed last week’s show due to ill health, is on the verge of dropping out of the competition altogether, as she’s still suffering from flu.

Next year is the 10thanniversary of The X-Factor, which in my opinion would be the perfect time to put an end to this farce and go out on a high.

Labrinth, with a little help from the Scottish singing phenomena Emeli Sande, scored his first UK No.1 single with Beneath Your Beautiful.

Robbie Williams looks set for a UK number 1 single this coming weekend as he’s leading the midweek sales with his new single, Candy.
